LAMINATE
Laminate is a picture of wood on a high density fiberboard. Because it is a composite, it is much harder and dent resistant than real wood. Because it is lamination, thin plastic, it is more scratch resistant that the flexible urethane that must go on hardwood. So, laminate is dent resistant, stain resistant, fade resistant.
NOT ALL LAMINATES ARE CREATED EQUAL. Quality in a laminate is in the volatility of products in the core, the locking mechanism, the variation in picture patter, direct pressure vs. high pressure core, quality of paper and lamination. When these things aren't done as successfully you will see peeling of lamination over time, separation of the boards, movement in humid and dry environments, and overall wear.
HERE we have all the top laminate manufacturers in the United States and selected imports. When they come from the same company they have the same general quality and warranties by a reputable company and distributer, but each offers different features. Each Manufacturer has a basic line that has a more common looking laminate style.
The Cork Story
Cork has been around for many years, but is starting to gain in popularity as quality improvements are made and new styles come out. The urethanes available now are at the quality standards of hardwood floors without a need to apply a coat after installation. Cork floors cannot be refinished but have really tuff urethane available, or can be re-coated to extend wear, depending on the manufacturing company.
Harvest cork does not kill the tree. In fact, if the cork (bark) is not removed the tree will suffocate and die. Harvesting the trees on rotation preserves the trees. Most cork comes from Portugal, so the major flooring manufacturers and centrally located there.
One of the huge advantages of cork is its "memory". Many of the dents and pressure you put n the floor will bounce back. It is like the idea of a wine cork, no matter how old the bottle the cork will come out and retain its original shape and not fit back into the bottle. If permanant damamge is done plank replacements are an option.
They have the latest styles all their products are covered with a urethane that can be screen and re-coated for extended wear.
Offers the latest styles as well and also has the option of their ceramic finish. It is much more resistant to scratching and prefect for low maintenance care. It cannot be screen and coated with a new layer of urethane protection, but it is designed to be more scratch resistant.
Marmoleum 
Marmoleum is compressed natural tree by-products and resins compressed and connected to a fiber-board core for click-locking floating installation. It comes in 12" x 36" pannels of squares so that it may be formed into different patterns. This makes for beautiful colors and interesting designs!
